Booyah!! How to Open a Conversation

Please give a big round of applause for Booyah advertising who is now a Choose People Certified Company!!

Initially, when you work with Booyah you get the sense you’re hanging with the “cool” kids.  Their client list will impress, there’s a humble swagger in the air and their office is housed in the “hip and happenin” Industry building in the heart of Denver, Colorado.  But Booyah is more than just a pretty face.  In addition to playful witty humor, you’ll find a team with a lot of heart, working really hard.  This team is extraordinarily dedicated – to both their clients and to one another.

Committed to continually crafting an extraordinary workplace culture, Troy Lerner, CEO of Booyah, stated, “Could it be any more obvious? We’re in the business of organizing human experts and putting them to work on client problems. When our people aren’t happy, or worse, when they leave, it has tremendous impact on our bottom line and our ability to attract new customers. Not to mention, it’s just a total downer to come to work when the staff doesn’t feel like a team. Why live that way?"

Did I mention, they are also really down-to-earth?

“A few years back we decided to rigorously measure and evaluate employee satisfaction, and it’s been nothing short of transformative to the business. Our retention rate has skyrocketed to over 93% (our industry peers are happy if they keep 70% of their staff in a given year), and we have more applications coming through the door than we know what to do with!”

“We’ve been open with our team about the various competing demands on our limited resources, and the realities of what we can and cannot afford. By including the greater team in our thought process (should we have a holiday bonus, or a big party?) I think we opened a conversation. With time, this conversation became much more intimate. What do you want in your career? How can you contribute to Booyah’s long-term plan?  The net result is a loyal group of people working for shared success. In hindsight it all seems so obvious, but it took real investment and a willingness to take a few punches to get on the right track. I’m glad we did it, and I’m sure we’ll continue." (emphasis added)

Here’s five smart simple questions Booyah used to open a conversation with their team:

  1. What do you think we should start doing? Stop doing?
  2. What Booyah accomplishment are you most proud in the last 12 months?
  3. What’s a project or task at work that doesn’t get enough credit for driving our success?
  4. What do you look forward to the most in an average day at work? Least?
  5. What are you planning to do differently at work in the next year?

I love these questions.  They speak to the importance of both team and personal responsibility, acknowledging and celebrating successes and learning about what could be better.
