How Emotional Health Won the Superbowl

ESPN recently wrote an extensive article on the unusual coaching methodology of Pete Carroll, Head Coach for the Seattle Seahawks.

Unusual because his philosophy hatched in answer to his question, "I wanted to find out if we went to the NFL and really took care of guys, really cared about each and every individual, what would happen?"

They’ll win the Superbowl, that’s what’ll happen.

As Alyssa Roenigk, the author of the article states – “The big idea is that happy players make for better players.”Their efforts to create conditions conducive to happiness included:

  • Culture of positivity in thoughts, words and actions
  • Meditation, visualization and yoga
  • Drafting players who demonstrate optimism and accountability
  • Setting goals for players that include “Always believe in myself.”
  • “Seahawks players are encouraged to use the support staff the way employees in the business world rely on a human resources department. Depressed? Worried about a loved one? Sick pet? The staff wants to hear about it. And if a player is dragging at practice, a coach will be proactive and ask why -- instead of jumping to conclusions and berating him in front of his teammates.”
  • Pete Carroll’s three rules: 1) Protect the team. 2) No whining, no complaining, no excuses. 3) Be early.
